Tasteless coating is totally convincing

An interview from the diabetes newspaper (10th year · No. 6 · October 29, 2025)

Innovations in the field of functional nutrition often arise where everyday experience, personal concern and entrepreneurial drive come together. Especially in the diabetes environment, solutions are needed that take practical challenges seriously without dramatizing them or overloading them with promises.

As part of the Startup Village at the DDG Diabetes Congress, young companies have the opportunity to present exactly such approaches. The winner of the competition in 2025 was Hyporest - dextrose mini tablets without flavor that open up a new look at carbohydrate intake in everyday life.

The following interview with Hyporest founder Julius Grennigloh from diabeteszeitung provides insight into the history of its creation, the idea behind the product and the response from practice and the community. The conversation is reproduced below in full and verbatim.

Interview

Mr. Grennigloh, what is Hyporest?

Behind it is a dextrose tablet with a tasteless coating. For example, it helps with hypoglycemia at night, when your teeth have already been brushed and you drink gummy bears, apple juice, or cola to replenish your glucose and you actually have to go to the bathroom to brush again to protect your teeth, or when the sweet taste of dextrose makes you want more sweets.

What does hyporest look like?

Hyporest is a tablet that measures seven millimeters in diameter. They come in a tin with 1,250 tablets each and a spoon that you can fill as needed. 25 tablets fit on one spoon, which corresponds to 0.5 carbohydrate units or 5 grams of carbohydrates. Bags for on the go are also available; Hyporest Pockets each contain ten bags of 100 tablets.

How did we come to develop a tasteless tablet?

I knew type 1 diabetes from the family. Then in 2019 I was suddenly affected myself. Even though I was aware of the symptoms of diabetes, I ignored them at first. But then the doctor confronted me with reality. The fact that I could no longer eat what I wanted and when I wanted immediately bothered me a lot.

Nowadays you get dictated by this CGM system in the form of an alarm, now you suddenly have to eat sweets or have something sweet to raise your blood sugar level again. My cousin had always been annoyed when he had to eat quickly, especially at night. But I only really understood his dilemma in the same situation. It didn't take long for me to come up with the idea of the tasteless tablet. I couldn't understand why a tablet like this wasn't available to buy before.

Is there a professional background, are you a chemist?

No, I did something completely different professionally. However, the idea of becoming an entrepreneur was always interesting to me, so I quit my job and founded euvorio GmbH in October 2022. It took two more years to get the finished product. Thanks to our own financial resources and a start-up grant, everything went smoothly. Support family and friends. There are now six of us in total.

Did we need partners from industry for the implementation?

Coatings for tablets, so-called coatings, are widespread. They exist in the pharmaceutical and confectionery industries. I was able to get a large company to work with me. A prototype was pressed and together we optimized the cover. The tablet now also contains an “explosive” that ensures that the coating swells and the swallowed tablet quickly decomposes in the stomach.

Where can you buy Hyporest?

We only started marketing last fall. Hyporest is already available from various mail order companies in the diabetes sector. Even athletes without diabetes now use Hyporest. Of course, the long-term goal is for Hyporest to be on the shelf in every pharmacy.

What is the response from users to the product?

The response has been very great, from users, but also from doctors and diabetes consultants. We have already sent out a lot of information material and many test boxes. A dentist to whom I told about Hyporest was really excited about the possible mouth protection. I wear a brace at night and have often left it off at night because of the sugar. Now I can wear them again with a clear conscience. I hope that with Hyporest we can contribute a little to reducing sugar consumption in Germany as a whole. Sweets are addictive and you often eat more sugar than you actually want.
