Anyone who has ever experienced hypoglycemia knows the feeling: you're low, the CGM screams, shaky hands, sweats and the burning need for quick carbohydrates. Your body is screaming for something sweet because that's how your brain has learned it. The usual solution is glucose plates, glucose gels or juice. Or mostly just candy. It went on like that for a long time until I realized that it wasn't a coincidence that the whole bag of gummy bears was suddenly empty, the high was under the blanket and then again with it Insulin had to be corrected: You are sitting on the famous blood sugar rollercoaster.
At some point I started specifically looking for alternatives: Is there a way to consume fast carbohydrates without the typical ones snacking effect to trigger? The answer is yes. And that's exactly what this post is about.
Why many classic hypo solutions trigger cravings
Pure Dextrose is actually ideal in the acute situation. Quickly available and with a high glycemic index. The problem usually arises from the accompanying circumstances:
- The sweet taste triggers a reward response (dopamine) and often leaves you wanting more.
- Prolonged chewing or sucking leads to prolonged tooth and tongue contact.
- Many alternatives bring additional calories or fat.
Short comparison (each for approx. 15-20 g of usable carbohydrates):
| product | Carbohydrates | Calories | Taste effect | Tooth/tongue contact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic glucose tablets | ~15g | ~55 kcal | very strong | long |
| Glucose gel | ~15g | ~60 kcal | medium | short |
| 200 ml grape juice | ~20g | ~90 kcal | strong | medium |
| 30 g whole milk chocolate | ~15g | ~160 kcal | extreme | long |
| Tasteless dextrose (Hyporest) | ~15g | ~52 kcal | none | none |
With tasteless dextrose, the calories remain moderate and the typical snacking effect is eliminated.
Does dextrose really exist without taste?
Yes. Hyporest consists of pure dextrose without any flavors or sweet coating. This means mini tablets with a protective film of 200 mg dextrose each that are easy to swallow - no chewing necessary, no taste, no residue in the mouth. Ideal for at night and when your teeth have already been brushed.
I've been using two variants for a few months:
- The classic can of Hyporest (313 g) for at home
- The Pockets (1000 pieces in small bags) for on the go
You can find out more here: Why hyporest.
How this becomes noticeable in everyday life
At night: I used to have to turn on the lights, drink juice or suck pills. Then brush your teeth again - ideally, but often not necessary. Today: Measure Hyporest with the measuring spoon, swallow, drink with water afterwards - no taste, no mess, quickly fall asleep again.
When doing sports or on the go: Quick carbohydrates without the subsequent urge for more sweets.
In everyday life: Simple and unobtrusive - no sticky mouth, no aftertaste, no “he's eating sweets again” looks. Sometimes I just take a few mini-tablets when the arrow is pointing diagonally downwards to straighten it out slightly. You don't always have to crash first :-).
How do I dose correctly?
One measuring spoon or 25 mini tablets correspond to exactly 5 g of dextrose = 0.5 KE. The included measuring spoon makes measuring very easy.
My practical orientation:
- For light low: 5 g (1 spoon)
- At Hypoglycemia: 10-20g and measure again after 10-15 minutes
Conclusion
If you're tired of classic hypo-snacks because they regularly trigger an unpleasant after-effect, it's worth trying tasteless dextrose.
For me personally, switching to Hyporest made a noticeable difference: precise carbohydrates without the usual cycle.
