Interview: Ich esse Süßes nicht mehr auf Kommando

Interview: I no longer eat sweets on command

Mr. Grennigloh, as a type 1 diabetic, how do you approach the topic of nutrition?

Grennigloh: Immediately after my diagnosis, my diabetologist explained to me that I didn't have to restrict my diet at all. However, I quickly learned that regularly consuming foods that cause significant fluctuations in blood sugar levels resulted in my blood sugar being above the healthy range too often. This ultimately resulted in poor long-term value. For me that was a sign that something had to change.

To what extent did you adapt your diet as a result?

Grennigloh: I switched to a low-carbohydrate diet: lots of vegetables, meat, fish and only a little fruit. In the evening I almost completely avoid carbohydrates. So I go to bed with good values. This has helped me keep my blood sugar levels more stable and feel better overall.

What everyday challenges have you experienced with diabetes that led to the development of Hyporest?

Grennigloh: The idea arose from the need to consume sweets without appetite and as if on command when people have low blood sugar levels - a problem that is familiar to both type 1 and insulin-dependent type 2 diabetics. The CGM alarm is particularly annoying at night. It means brushing your teeth again and being wide awake, or going back to sleep with sugar residue in your mouth. One is stressful, the other is unhealthy, as diabetics are particularly susceptible to dental problems.
A special feature of Hyporest is that the tiny dextrose tablets are covered with a tasteless protective layer. You swallow it with a little water and within a very short time it dissolves in your stomach so that the dextrose is quickly available. This means that your teeth and oral mucosa do not even come into contact with the sugar.

How has your everyday life changed since then and what do you give other people?

Grennigloh: In the past, I often overcompensated for low blood sugar. Because Hyporest has no taste, I am better able to consume only the amount of carbohydrates I need and no more. Because of this, I eat less sweets, which has had a positive impact on my long-term value. In addition, calorie intake is reduced. I also use this advantage when doing sports, on the go and whenever I need quick carbohydrates without a sweet taste.
